Description:

Small snake, about 7 inches in length. Overall tan in color with two rows of spots dorsally.

Habitat:

Urban park.

Notes:

Originally found in a local backyard in the city, unwanted by resident. Relocated to park about 2 miles away.

(17-33 cm) Dekay's brownsnake, is often mistaken as a baby copperhead by people who have not learned the difference. These gentle, harmless snakes feed upon earthworms, slugs and snails, and other small invertebrates and even small salamanders. They have specialized teeth and jaws that allow them to pull snails out of their shells and eat them. They are native to North America from Southern Ontario and Quebec throughout the United States into Mexico and southward to Guatemala, Honduras.
