Field Notes

Description:

These were tiny wasps, less than half an inch (though I'm not very good with measurement!) They had this nest in a palm just below the veranda of the house and were feeding on a bunch of rotting bananas hanging at the side of the house. The holes they made grew visibly every day till nearly all the bananas had big holes in them.

Notes:

A type of wasp nest found in Costa Rica

Karen, quite small... less than half an inch (though I'm not very good with measurement!)
thanks Juan for clearing that up...
A very interesting spotting and great pics Pam ! thanks.
Hi Karen. These are not bees, and of course they are not stingless. In fact, the sting of these wasps is really painfull.
When we were there, they told us it was a stingless bee. Saw tons of them - but this nest is cooler than most we saw
Please add this beautiful nest to the Nests, hives, bowers, webs, and other animal architecture mission!
Remarkable hive! Where is the opening located? Looks like some kind of fibrous material like a paper wasp makes.
