Field Notes

Description:

Sunbirds are very small birds, smaller than sparrow, but this species counts as medium sized sunbird, about 10cm in length. The adult male (pics 1 and 2) has a glossy green head, throat and nape, and a violet breast band, and yellow belly - in some subspecies, the belly of the male can be orange or white. Pics 3 and 4 show either a female or a non-breeding male, plain olive-brown on the back and dull yellow below.

Habitat:

This spotting was another interesting one spotted from my window after settling down in my residence in Freetown. We are in a totally urban part of the city if you can really find a totally urban patch around... A very hilly and wooded area, where shackles mix freely with urban gardens and constructions. Restricted to the continent, this species is a resident breeder and found in a broad range of habitats, from arid thornscrub to moist savanna, gardens, and forest edge.
