Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized black wasps with a relatively long petiole ("thread-waisted"), and usually with orange on the abdomen. Generally, males have weaker reddish markings than females, are more slender, and lack a tarsal rake on the front legs. Identification to species difficult. (information from BugGuide)

Habitat:

Wooded area with small ponds nearby

Notes:

This wasp was spotted in an area where a small pond had dried up. She was dragging this variable oakleaf caterpillar (Lochmaeus manteo) back to her brood chamber, where she would eventually lay a single egg on it.
