Field Notes

Description:

Skink (Scincidae). There are 4 different types of skinks in Maryland. Broad-headed skink, Common Five-lined skink, Northern Coal Skink, and Little Brown Skink. I'm not sure which one I've spotted in this picture. It was on the side of a tree and did not move the entire time we were there. It was a pretty golden color with a smooth head and a brown stripe running the length of its body on either side. Size about 3 - 5¾ inches.

Habitat:

This skink was spotted on a tree in a wooded area at Downs Park in Pasadena, Maryland.

Thank you LisaPowers for help in further identifying this particular spotting.
The coal skink does not live in the part of Maryland where this was spotted. It is also not a little brown skink. That makes it a Plestiodon species, either broad-headed or common five-lined. I cannot see the head scales enough to determine which of the two it is.
