Field Notes

Description:

Ypthima doleta, the Common Ringlet, is a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family. It is found in Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, southern Sudan, Uganda and north-western Tanzania. The habitat consists of humid areas, including farmland, forest margins and glades.

Habitat:

Feeding on wild sunflowers

Notes:

In the face of threat, those apparently plain brown wings are opened to reveal eye spots or ringlets that are as real as a glare of an angry bird. This one revolved so that the bigger ringlets looked at my direction, like big eye spots for big predators and vice versa.
