Field Notes

Description:

2-3 inches long. Predominantly dark brown.

Habitat:

Sidewalk, beside retention ditch of water with water fountain. Other nearby species: Northern rough necked swallows, Canada Geese, Common Grackles.

Notes:

Could this be a Tapered-Tail Darner, or maybe a Harlequin? Update: ID confirmed as Taper-Tailed Darner. Thanks to Mike Boatwright for noting this is a new early date for VA (previous was April 16). ...It is curious that the name varies. iNaturalist uses Taper-tailed instead of Tapered-tail.
