Field Notes

Description:

We found this beautiful female Charina bottae on a hiking trail in the eastern Cascades. She was crossing a trail near a stream, during a sunny and beautiful late mountain afternoon.

Habitat:

Scree, mountain creek, pine forest.

Notes:

Just like the books say...as soon as I picked up the boa to move her off of the trail she tucked her head and rolled up into a ball as a defensive posture. She also excreted a rather foul smelling musk!

Thank you! It's always a joy to find these rare and singular snakes. I took the photo with the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone, so it looks greener than it actually is.
Very nice find! Please consider adding this to the Snakes of the United States mission.
