Anthopleura elegantissima, aggregating anemone
Anthopleura elegantissima (?)
38.5772, -123.312
Field Notes
Description:
Small anemones 2.5cm to 5.0cm (1 to 2 inches) in diameter, white bodies instead of green, in closed position, displaying a pink ring at what might be assumed to be the base of the retracted tentacles.
Habitat:
Exposed coast, protected cove, Zone 2, under rock ledge away from direct sunlight. Gerstle Cove State Marine Reserve, Salt Point State Park, Jenner CA.
Notes:
Green Anthopleura elegantissima occur in abundance elsewhere on the same rock, on the surface exposed to sunlight, and on nearby rocks. Is this specimen an instance of a pink-tentacle variety with white body color due to lack of sunlight, or a separate species? Photo taken in early AM at minus tide.
