Field Notes

Description:

The weaver ants (you can see them in the first photo) have folded the leaves and made a pouch nest. The inside has a cottony lining and it can be seen in the corner; lower, left. The mating Leptosia nina, the Oriental psyche might have caused tremors when they landed on it...but the ants were not perturbed...I think getting mating butterflies on an ant's nest is a lucky shot.

Habitat:

Kayaler bagan or Kayal's garden is now a bird sanctuary in the heart of Kolkata city. Although called a garden, it is not a landscaped area with only garden varieties...rather everything growing wild is preserved.Old, epiphyte laden trees rub branches with bamboo groves and wild vines trail all over . So called weeds flourish. It is also called Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary. ...a 17 acre small enclosed area.
