Field Notes

Description:

Another student and I were walking home, when I noticed a white shape in our ditch (a stagnant form of water). Upon picking up the shape, we noticed it was a cylinder shape rounded off at both ends. It was slimy to the touch and clearly had a yolk in it, upon touching it, it would bend beneath our fingertips (suggesting that either the water had softened it, or it failed to calcify.). There were trees around the egg, but none close enough to have dropped it, our grass is too thick for it to have rolled over into the pool (it has quite a bit of weight to it as well, so that was ruled out too).

Habitat:

No known habitat, but water is the best possibly.

Notes:

- When the egg dried, it wasn't slimy.

-the water made the egg cold, and after the egg dried, it remained cold.

-we put it safely in the fridge (in hopes of it possibly showing improvement) but upon looking in on it after an hour, the small indent that was made grew larger in size.

-egg will be given to Biology teacher after school returns on Monday, for now it remains in the fridge.

I can't find any reptiles that lay their eggs in water, especially such as this. But it can't be amphibian because (as you stated.) they do tend to be transparent and jellylike...
I want to say reptile- although amphibians usually lay their eggs in water, theirs tend to be transparent and jellylike. Go back and edit and categorize this one as Reptile- see if you can get more information that way.
What snake lays it's eggs in water?..because the grass is too thick for it to have rolled into this water, and the egg has a weight to it that wouldn't allow it to roll what-so-ever..but I am really appreciative of this answer KarenPuracan, can you help try and get this species down?
Possibly a snake egg... A decent-sized one too.
