Field Notes

Description:

The green cicada is approximately 1.5 inches long. It is winged and flies from treed area to treed area. Although it is hard to see, the cicada has 3 eyes. The 3rd eye can be discerned between the main two.
This cicada can be identified by its song. It starts ""Gar-Gar-Gar-Gar-Gar-Gar-..." at mid level, quickly increases in speed and volume, before dropping way off.

Habitat:

Our backyard is well landscaped with bushes and trees as can be seen in the third photo. Cicada scar the soft limbs and lay their eggs.

Notes:

The best reference for this is the bugguide reference. It provides a very comprehensice classification of insects.

Special thanks to ForestDragon for the identification.
