Field Notes

Description:

Although it may be hard to see in these photographs, there were hundreds of Broad-winged Hawks in this kettle (a group of migrating raptors or, in general, a flock of birds of prey).

On this particular day, 8507 Broad-winged Hawks were spotted by the Detroit River Hawk Watch Group. https://hawkcount.org/day_summary.php?rsite=285

Habitat:

Detroit River / Lake Erie, along the Fall Hawk Migration route.

Notes:

According to "https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Broad-winged_Hawk/overview", One of the greatest spectacles of migration is a swirling flock of Broad-winged Hawks on their way to South America. Also known as “kettles,” flocks can contain thousands of circling birds that evoke a vast cauldron being stirred with an invisible spoon.
