Field Notes

Description:

Family: Erebidae, Subfamily: Erebinae. (Underwings, Zales and Related Owlets) A common owlet moth seen during the day and night. TL 17-22 mm. FW is variably tan to grayish brown. Brown AM and PM bands converge at inner margin. Hosts: Mostly legumes, also variety of grasses and herbaceous plants. Adult feeds on same.

Habitat:

Meadow, fields, lawns.

Notes:

Very common moth in my area. Have seen it often flying about my meadow or coming to my porch light. I found this hanging onto a plant in the middle of the backyard. Night flash photo.
