Field Notes

Description:

The White-lined sphinx is a moth of the Sphingidae family. Its range extends from Central America, through the United States and into parts of Canada. The fore wing is dark brown with a tan stripe which extends from the base to the apex. There are also white lines that cover the veins. The black hind wing has a broad pink median band. It has a wingspan of 2 to 3 inches. (information from Wikipedia)

Habitat:

Suburban backyard - attracted to blacklight

Notes:

I was checking my blacklight one last time before bed and was out in only shorts and flip-flops. I was crouched down on the deck, about to shoot a photo of a moth on my sheet, when all of a sudden something large started buzzing me. It bounced off my legs and chest several times as I tried not to panic. It took a few seconds but I quickly realized it was a large sphinx moth that was fluttering into me repeatedly. It finally settled down and I was able to snap some photos.
