Field Notes

Description:

As a species, adults vary from 35-70mm, over 2". There are two horns, a short one emerging from the forehead and a longer one below. They feed mainly on rotting wood but enjoy sugary fruits, also.

Habitat:

They spend most of their life underground. They only emerge for a few months in late spring, then die in the Fall.

Notes:

This is a popular commerical insect. In Japan, battles are staged between adults for gambling purposes. They are, however, pests to farmers.

I saw this one during a stay at Korea's first Buddhist temple, Torisa (도리사).
