Field Notes

Description:

These birds were either recent escapees or perhaps a small feral flock. We weren't far enough out in the country that it would be plausible for anyone to let them free range. They are definitely not native to the area, but have been a somewhat prized domesticated addition to some Southern poultry flocks since colonial times. They have a very strange call, and because they react to approaching strangers they actually make good "watch" animals on a farm.

Habitat:

Their native range includes all suitable habitats in sub-Saharan Africa, but they have been successfully introduced in many different regions worldwide, including western Yemen, southern France, Australia and Brazil. Birds that have escaped from domesticated or exotic flocks can be seen nearly anywhere and may establish small feral populations.

Notes:

Spotted crossing a through-road between suburban neighborhoods in Acworth, GA.
