Field Notes

Description:

Small squirrel with a ragged, changing-clothes-for-summer look about him/her. Seemed to be shedding a pale chesnut-coloured coat to reveal a more vibrant coat beneath, which matched the tail colour.

Cream belly and eye-ring. I couldn't really see the black line that's found on the side of American red squirrels, but I suspect it was simply obscured by the shedding coat.

Habitat:

Heavily wooded section of an urban park in Toronto, Canada (Lambton Woods). A little back from the busy paved trail (which was full of bikes and strollers and such) but was right beside the less-busy dirt path through the trees. Perched on a fallen log to watch us.

Notes:

This squirrel was interested in people, first checking what we were doing then waiting for two other trail walkers to reach the area before finally scampering away. I suspect there have been some handouts to be had in the past. :)
