Couldn't tell you what kind of tree it was, there were pine trees all around though. The tree was right at the edge of a tiny pond/wet area. They were growing at about chest level if I remember correctly.

Assuming this is on a tree.. how far above the ground and what size and what type of tree? A quick guess without all that would be some type of armillaria.
