Heliconia
Heliconia sp.
-2.15, -77.69
Field Notes
Description:
This is the common version we have all over around us. It flower points up from a stiff stem (the other hangs down). The flowers are stiff, various shades of red from bright red to dark red. The inside of the flower is light green to yellow.
Habitat:
These grow virtually everywhere here in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador, tending more toward very wet, marshy areas.
Notes:
I observe two kinds of heliconia. I'm sure there are more varieties, but I notice the large sharp pointed "claws) point up on the big ones rising from a single strong stalk. The other kind hands down from a bendable stalk. As there are many species in Ecuador, I can't even guess what these are.
