Field Notes

Description:

With tail, this agama was about 20 cm long. I doubt that it is a Southern tree agama (Acanthocercus atricollis) since I find the snout of this one a bit shorter.

Habitat:

Tree close to a man made structure in Mlawula nature reserve, Swaziland.
(semi dry area, mainly woodland ans savannah)

Unfortunately, I haven't yet been able to find a good description of A. a. distanti to confirm size range - I will keep investigating!

I agree that your suggestion and this spotting are similar in many ways. But the size of this one is quite big (similar to the Southern tree agama) so that confuses me a bit. I think that (not sure) Agama aculeata distanti area bout 10 cm Snout-to-vent...

It looks like this might be Distant's Ground Agama (Agama aculeata distanti) - it looks like this might have a row of spines on it's back, which would be definitive for this subspecies. http://www.ispot.org.za/node/231796 http://www.sntc.org.sz/reptiles/speciesinfo.asp?spid=62
