Field Notes

Description:

One of the fastest birds in North America. These birds usually fly high and almost mistaken for swallows. Brown upperside and partial under. The chin, throat and a narrow strip of white on the belly and white on the sides of the rump. When in flight you can make out the white secondaries that are on the back of the wing showing through. They have short legs that are mainly for clinging onto vertical surfaces like cliffs and would rarely ever be seen on the ground or on branches. Most of the time the tail will be closed to a point but can also fan out for control. The second and last photo is where I spotted them roosting for short perionds of time. Some describes these birds as looking like flying cigars.

Habitat:

Mountains and canyons. This and the other 3 I spotted were in a canyon.

Notes:

I got lucky. I was watching them fly and knew I could never get a shot of them in flight. But I took some figuring they would be totally blurred. I was shocked these came out as well as they did for also being cropped down.
Forgot to mention there are bats in some of these caves.
