Description:
Little Friarbird nests comprise of "a large variety of materials including bark fiber, fine grass, spiders’ web, rootlets and hair [as you can see, this nest has cleverly integrated other materials] The nest is usually built over a water body low in tree branches, often suspended in twigs 2 – 10 meters high and built within dropped foliage." (Wiki) The nests are "large, deep cup-shaped nests[,] usually suspended from a forked branch, often overhanging water[.]" (Birdlife Australia) I have seen about three different nests now and not one of them have been hanging over water.
Habitat:
This nest is suspended from a forked branch of a tree near the front gate of the rubbish dump.
Notes:
This nest has 2 eggs inside (see spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1848426595 ) and the female incubates the eggs alone (see pic 3). The nest was spotted by my mum as we were leaving the dump. Exiting before us was a truck which frightened the female out of the the nest which gave us time to jump out and have a quick look. The branch of this tree looked like it was ready to break off from the trunk but the nest was securely attached (see pic 1). 18 days later we found two little chicks!
