Neon Skimmer female
Libellula croceipennis
33.0786, -97.0719
Field Notes
Description:
The females are a dull orange, stout, and have essentially clear wings. There is a flange near the tip of their abdomen and when they lay eggs, this causes a drop of water to splash several inches away. The females lay one egg at a time by flying over the water and dipping into the water each time. The splash often distracts our fish away from the egg, which floats slowly down into the water.
Habitat:
Pond in native plant school garden.
Notes:
This female was laying eggs in the pond.
