Eastern black swallowtail (female with eggs)
Papilio polyxenes asterius
32.605, -84.8828
Field Notes
Description:
I saw a butterfly behaving in a way that didn't look like it was feeding on the flowers and looked closer to find she was laying eggs. This medium sized butterfly was black with light markings. It was missing it's left hindwing so the typical colors that would help with identification are not present. However, this dill plant has hosted Eastern Black Swallowtails already this season, and the dotted abdomen and markings of the top left wing and interior right hind wing make it a match for this species... additionally small yellow eggs can be seen dispersed through the flowers of the dill plant.
Habitat:
West central GA
