Field Notes

Description:

Red. Blue. Green. Typical barbet with bristles on the beak. (last shot is of the bird mounting a vigil.)

Habitat:

It excavated many cavities (different sizes) and took on a woodpecker couple too ....finally it appears to have moved in. The dead tree was that of a Kadamba (Neolamarckia cadamba) which is now fungus encrusted and has peeling bark. It is soft wood so the birds chipped away at it rather easily. the soil underneath the tree was absolutely covered with wood chips.
The tree is alongside a rather busy road in a residential colony.

Notes:

I worry about the bird's safety from urchins.
