It is interesting, I saw one in a picture sometime ago, but it was not this one and after I got a book on World moths, I tried to find it again and never found it. It had not been identified. Thanks for the reference.
I'd agree that this is Wheeleria spilodactylus (Horehound plume moth). A couple of the native species are somewhat similar, and this one is rather worn, but all that can be seen fits spilodactylus well.
See http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Wheeleria%20spilodactylus#gallery or http://wiki.trin.org.au/pub/images/PlumeMoths/WheeleriaSpilodactylusCurtis1827/1/0._Wheeleria_spilodactylus_identification.jpg.
Yes, I can never get them completely in focus either. ;) I see them a lot at night on the window screens, but can't usually be bothered to get out my camera since I rarely get a decent shop.
This one is probably a Horehound plume moth, introduced to attack the introduced Horehound plant (because that always goes soooo well), but I'm not certain.
We have Plume moths here in Madagascar. I have taken their pictures several times, but getting them completly in focus seems to be a challenge. I didn't know their genus. Thanks for including it!
