Field Notes

Description:

Small Australian honeyeater, grey brown colouring lighter on belly, some olive green colour in wings and tail, tiny yellow marking behind eye. Feeds on nectar, small insects, lerps, honeydew. For a small bird it has a loud call and its singing is melodious. There are at least 5 races in Australia and islands such as Bali, Tiwi Islands, but during migration the races integrate and possible cross-breeding occurs.

Habitat:

Found in varied habitats around Australia, there has been a decline in some areas where it was once common. This one found dipping into water troughs on a dry afternoon.

Thanks venusflytrap and RiekoS. It was a busy afternoon for birds taking a bath at that time. I have more photos I will post soon.
