Description:
The Red Bud Tree is a small tree that usually grows from 20-30 ft tall with a 26-30 ft spread. It has dark bark, smooth, later with scaly ridges. It has slender and zigzaged twigs and are nearly black in color. The flowers are light to dark magenta pink in color.
Habitat:
Native to North America, from Southern Ontario, Canada to Northern Florida but can usually thrive as far west as California.
Notes:
Appearance is usually differentiated by location. It is edible and is usually used for seasoning on wild game, which is why it is also called the Spicewood Tree. It is also commonly used as a landscape ornamental plant.
The flowers are pollinated by long-tongued bees such as blueberry and carpenter bees.
