Field Notes

Description:

The fluted trunk and branches is the most distinctive characteristic of this small tree. The wood is dense and hard. This is a very slow growing tree. In North Carolina, musclewood trees are supposed to grow to about 12" in diameter. This particular tree is 26" in diameter.

Habitat:

Mixed forest.

Notes:

Based on rate of growth of younger known trees, I estimate this tree to be over 150 years old. Field guides that I've seen say that musclewoods only live between 50-75 years. I've nicknamed it "grandpappy" and like to show everyone his lichen beard (seen in photo 3).
