Species ID Suggestions

Comments (4)

Just curious, because I didn't have any doubt that this is Pink Lady Slipper based on the flower alone. Is there anything that it could be beside pink lady slipper in that area (NC/Appachians) that this could be?? Are there other similar orchids in the area?
Machi makes a good point. I thought it looked like pairs of leaves at ground level, each with a stalk coming up, so enough to suggest a possibility. When you're spotting plants, it's good to get several shots, when you can ... flower, leaves, stalks, ground, bark, seeds, general shape. You never know what you'll need!
I agree with suzmonk, but if you have any photos (or recollection) of the base of the plant that would help with a more concrete ID. Pink Lady's Slipper has two leaves at the base, and it looks like you have a cluster of three plants in a small area so it is hard to tell.
Pink lady's slipper, I think ... Cypripedium acaule, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cypripedium_acaule
