Description:

Less commonly for this species, this is a female showing 2 eyespots in the forewing. Still different from a gatekeeper since it does not have the smaller white spots in the lower underwing.
In the area there was a mix of Maniola jurtina butterflies along with gatekeepers and they are often difficult to tell apart.

Habitat:

Ter Yde, Belgium. Meadow close to the sea.

Interesting case Marta! Maniola jurtina, female. It can sometimes show a double black spot with white inside on the forewing, but it is asymetrical (unlike in tithonus), as seen is your specimen. Confirmed indeed by the absence of smaller white spots in the lower underwing.
