Field Notes

Description:

Less commonly for this species, this is a female showing 2 eyespots in the forewing. Still different from a gatekeeper since it does not have the smaller white spots in the lower underwing.
In the area there was a mix of Maniola jurtina butterflies along with gatekeepers and they are often difficult to tell apart.
In the attached link it is mentioned that Maniola with two spots do also exist:

Habitat:

Ter Yde, Belgium. Meadow close to the sea.

Many thanks for confirming, Daniele, now I can correct it. Sure, I would love to have a copy of the guide if you can share it with me :-)
Interesting case Marta! Maniola jurtina, female. It can sometimes show a double black spot with white inside on the forewing, but it is asymetrical (unlike in tithonus), as seen is your specimen. Confirmed indeed by the absence of smaller white spots in the lower underwing. My source: http://www.lepido.ch/guide-d-identification Only available in print at this stage but I'd 'be happy to ship you a copy :-) I'm been going on field trips with the author for 3 seasons now.
