Ostracion meleagris
42.4755, -70.9973
Field Notes
Description:
Pictures 1 & 2 are of the female of the species, picture 3 is of a male for comparison. Males are less frequently spotted, but the species itself is common. Juveniles with male coloration are never seen, so either immature males have the female color pattern, or all juveniles are female with some changing sex later in life. Spotted Boxfish live in small haremic groups. Males defend territories against other males. The species name means "guineafowl" (a bird native to Africa covered with light spots).
Habitat:
Reefs at any depth.
