Field Notes

Description:

This moth had very interesting movement. It kept curling it's body up into a U shape.
Hylesia is a genus of moths in the Saturniidae family

Habitat:

found in the evening on a sheet under a halogen light, in pre-montane rainforest outside Tuis, Costa Rica

Notes:

Don't know why some of the shadows under the halogen light come out green. And if it's possible to remove it remove it.

Interesting C.Sydes... Yes it could have been defensive behaviour. It was flat till I started photographing it...
I've noticed some of our larger twig-mimic moth (haven't got my books here to give you a name) show a similar display when disturbed and end up on the ground feigning dead in this attitude, then if you leave them after a while they suddenly straighten up and fly off to land and become a twig again. I wonder if its a defense mechanism?
