Reddish-brown Stag Beetle

Lucanus capreolus

Comments (4)

I did a little research and I'm pretty sure that it is Lucanus capreolus. He was just a little smaller than my thumb (I assume I have a normal sized thumb?). However, the Lucanus elaphus is also indigenous to Ohio according to a few websites.
How large was it? This species could be up to around 1.5 inches long. There is another species, Lucanus elaphus, which is probably an inch or so larger...But, I'm not sure of the distribution of that one.
That's what I though, but I talked to a friend who said they are much smaller where he is from, so I wasn't sure anymore. Thank you!!
This species of stag beetle would be my guess because of the orange coloring at the base of each leg.
