Field Notes

Description:

Family: Sphingidae, Subfamily: Macroglossinae (Small Sphinx Moths). Length: 28-38 mm. Wingspan: 45-65 mm. FW is variably light brown to green (this one in rough condition and tan). Thin orange border and wide bands of darker shading, boldest beyond outer PM line. Dull orange HW has a brown or greenish or in this case tan patch at anal angle. Hosts: Virginia Creeper, grape and viburnum. (Common)

Habitat:

Fields, meadow, woodlands, lawns where host plant is. (Came to black light)

Notes:

With Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) Length: 26 mm (Royal Silkworm Moth). Virginia Creeper Sphinx Moth shown here is the 3rd different one I found (different color and condition)
