Field Notes

Description:

Large white waterbirds with distinctive long, flattened and spoon shaped bills. Characteristic for African Spoonbill is the red face and red legs, and grey bill bordered in red.

Habitat:

Common in Sahel belt through East Africa down to South Africa; and seen in wetlands - lakes, estuaries, floodplains... Here, seen in Chad, in semi-desertic Bahr-el-Gazal region, in a small village lake (I totally forgot the name of the village, but it is somewhere between Moussoro and Mao)...

Notes:

According to my most trusted and most used field guide "Bird of Africa - south of the Sahara" (Sinclair and Ryan) it is mainly absent from forested Western and Central Africa.
