Description:
I went outside at night, and I saw a large insect, resting under the outdoor, night light bulb. This insect, was two inches long. The color of this insect, was bright green. This insect, had a head, thorax, and an abdomen. This insect, had two antennae, and two, black, compound eyes.This insect, had four wings, and six jointed legs. At the end of its abdomen, it has a curved ovipositor. It's ovipositor is curved upwards, so the female katydid, can lay her eggs, on the edges of leaves. Ovipositor- the ovipositor, is an organ used by some animals, for laying eggs. This insect, has a medium, yellow-green line, running from the back of its head,and along the top of its thorax, etc. Its two, large, rear legs, are used for jumping. Katydid: a large, typically green, long-horned grasshopper, native to North America. Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Orthoptera - Order Orthoptera: Grasshoppers, Crickets, and Katydids. The name 'Orthoptera', means 'straight wings'. Katydids, undergo incomplete or gradual metamorphosis. It goes through three stages of development. Egg, nymph, and adult. There ears, tympana ( hearing organs ), are on there front legs. Katydids, eat leaves, flowers, the stems, and fruits of many plants, and a few species, are predators, and will eat other insects.
Habitat:
Katydids, exist in terrestrial habitats, throughout the world. They are associated with fields and meadows, but there are some species, that prefer caves, deserts, bogs, and seashores. Katydids are widespread, occuring in every region of the world, except Antartica. They are typically found living on trees, bushes, or grasses, often matching the appearance of there surroundings. Katydids, spend most of there lives on the plants they eat, so they need habitats, with lots of plants. Katydids, can be found on branches of trees or bushes, in North America, and in other parts of the world.
