Field Notes

Description:

It was early evening and the light was fading rapidly when I was leaving the preserve. This beautiful barred owl alighted on a tree near a path, peering into a field on the other side where rodents were likely moving about. A gentleman who came up behind me was thrilled to see the bird - it was the first time he had seen a live owl.

Habitat:

Brumley Nature Preserve has a varied habitat, including woods, ponds, meadows and a creek.

Thank you, ThePhysicalTherapyQuest!
Thanks, Neil! And congratulations on your SOTD with that cool skink!
Awesome spotting, Maria. That's a beautiful bird. Best wishes for your SOTW nomination.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
What a beautiful owl to have spotted. Thanks for sharing these pictures. Gorgeous!
AGREED....Maria!! Always fun & educational too!!
How nice that you got to visit a rehab and rescue facility, Sarah. They do great work in getting injured birds who can heal ready to fly free again. And having the permanently injured birds as "educational ambassadors" lets people who may otherwise never see a live owl appreciate how stunning and interesting they are.
You are welcome, Maria!! And NO DOUBT!! My Dad lives ourside of Clearwater, FL & recently, we visited McGough Wildlife Park...the owls there were STUNNING!! They were residents (injured & being rehabbed) - and the staff brought out several and told us stories of each! We got up close with them & OH what a TREAT!! :)
Thanks for your nice comments, Daniele and Sarah. It was a very nice spotting for me and the gentleman who watched with me.
Thank you, Ava. This really was a very lovely bird!
