Field Notes

Description:

Erect stem, leaves to 20 in. Plant hairless or stem covered with gland-tipped hairs. Leaves oval to lance-shaped, with shallow rounded teeth or entire. Stem topped with 3 to many flowers. Flower with all parts in 4 or 5, lavender to magenta, occasionally white petals, lower part cream or yellow, red band at base.

Habitat:

Grows in very wet places that are usually drier in summer, boggy areas and shorelines, from coastal to high elevations.

Notes:

Spotted this lovely flower on the Skyline Loop Trail, Mt. Rainier NP.
