Field Notes

Description:

The Chimney Sweeper is a moth found throughout Europe.This unusual species flies by daytime, and prefers bright sunshine. It is completely black except for the white fringes at the tips of the forewings.

Habitat:

Alpine meadow, alt. ~1400m

Notes:

The wingspan is 23–27 mm The moth flies from June to August in this area.

No worries Daniele, I was just thinking out loud really :-) I saw one daytime flying moth but it didn't stop for a photo! none throughout the night though. I hope you enjoyed Iceland :-)

Interesting point about the daylight Debbie, I don't have an immediate answer... I was actually in Iceland in June with 24 hr daylight and saw plenty of "daytime" flying moths. Most were very small. I've only uploaded one so far: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/34132011

Thanks Daniele, unfortunately I am not still in Finland but I was keeping my eye open for moths, I was wondering if the 24 hour daylight had anything to do with the lack of moths I saw in the evening?!

Thanks Debbie and J! Debbie watch out if you're still in Finland: 2 out of the 3 other spottings we have for this unusual species on Project Noah are from Norway and Russia. But it is found in the UK too.
