Field Notes

Description:

This goose was hanging out alone near a pathway and I noticed it was missing a foot. It was very friendly and didn't mind me stopping to take a few photos. I did not see this bird attempt to fly at any time, but it could hobble around quite easily.

Habitat:

Photos taken next to a walking path near a slough and mudflats at the south end of the San Francisco Bay.

Notes:

This goose was very far south for the summertime, which I thought was unusual; Canada geese usually migrate south for the winter (starting around September) and then return north for breeding in the summer. Possibly this goose had been left behind in the previous migration north because of his foot, or perhaps it was not of breeding age and was left behind (does this happen?), but either way I found it interesting.
