Termite Mound

Description:
This is the only termite mound I found along any of the tracks we walked. No signs of any termites, so species unknown. This mound, which I think is rather old, possibly disused, has been constructed on (and in) an old, hollow tree trunk. The mound is as hard as the sandstone rocks which dominate the area. The last two photos show signs that the surface has been broken, possibly by some digging animal in search of tasty morsels. Echidnas have been sighted in the reserve.
Habitat:
Mound situated beneath native casuarina trees. Area also recently subjected to bushfires. Toohey Forest is a eucalyptus woodland reserve of approximately 655 hectares. The forest is situated within an urban area on the south side of Brisbane, within the city limits.
