Field Notes

Description:

Family Syrphidae, Subfamily Eristalinae, Tribe Eristalini, Subtribe Eristalina, Genus Eristalinus. Eristalinus is a genus of hoverfly. Most species have very distinctive eye marking in the form of spots or banding, though these features may fade on some preserved specimens. Most are stout flies, and are nimble flyers, even compared to other hoverfly species. (Wikipedia).

Habitat:

A house's backyard, in the outskirts of a small, rural town.

Notes:

Common name of this one comes from the striped pattern of its eyes.

@Brian38 and @Leuba Ridgway: Thank you; @Ingrid3: Yes, they look exactly like those psichedelic goggles people used in the 60's (believe me, I was there... :-)).
The visual acuity must be through the roof! Look at those goggles!!!
Those eyes are amazing! Great spotting, Sergio!
