Field Notes

Description:

Large round balls (a little larger than baseball or cricket balls) made of dung with a layer of earth/sand covering them.

Habitat:

Found in a sandy patch in the bushveld.

Notes:

These balls had not been given the chance to incubate the dungbeetle larvae, as a larger animal (most likely a honey badger) had dug them up from the earth and broken them open to get to the larvae inside.

Moved to the Arthropods category :-) Or if you want to use this as a sign for a honey badger, choose mammals.
