long, all green stick bug, note the strange curly thin growth coming out of its head in the second photo, not sure what that is

A leg eh? I wouldn't have thought it was that. Thanks for the info Albert.
Dan, the curly thing is the deformed right leg. They can regrow their legs, but not right away within the next molt. It may take several molts to get the legs back and sometimes, the new molted leg is deformed.
