Field Notes

Description:

Singing in the rain! A black and white Australian bird with an incredible singing voice and ability to mimic. Large grey sturdy beak tipped with black used for digging up grubs, catching and eating small invertebrates, mammals, birds, insects, grubs, reptiles. Golden brown to reddish eyes, grey legs, males and females similar with differences being more distinctive outlines of black against white in the males. Variations of amount of white on these birds once used to distinguish the 3 sub species across Australia. They are now classified as one species and these variations can be seen even in family groups. Maggies are especially aggressive & territorial at breeding time when they are known to swoop anyone or anything they feel is a threat within their territory.

Habitat:

Found throughout much of Australia. This one in dry woodland in north east NSW.
