Field Notes

Description:

Large insect that resembles a damselfly, although the abdomen is longer than the wings. Antennae are fairly short and clubbed.

Habitat:

Grasslands.

Notes:

The larvae of this insect builds conical sandtraps into which its prey, usually ants, tumble only to be met with large, powerful jaws. The "doodlebug" then pulls the ant below the surface of the sand and eats it.
