Field Notes

Description:

Hypolycaena antifaunus, the Large Fairy Hairstreak, is a butterfly in the Lycaenidae family. It is found in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.

Habitat:

The habitat consists of primary forests.

Notes:

The false head acts as a decoy, to distract prey from attacking the real head. When it senses danger, it rubs the two loose ends (streaks) together and the outcome is very misleading to potential predators.
