Field Notes

Description:

A ground-dwelling bird that is capable of flight in a short burst. I was fortunate to spot this secretive bird as it crossed the gravel road I was on. Their plumage helps them blends into vegetation with males having striking black and white head.

Habitat:

Spotted crossing a gravel Road at The Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas. Open meadows with wildflowers, wetlands, and deciduous and riparian forests nearby.

Notes:

Their population is down as much as 85 percent in some areas due to overhunting and habitat loss.
